Submitting a project proposal
The call for submissions for the first round of Net Zero Polar Science (NZPS) Doctoral Training Programme project proposals is now closed. The second round will open in October 2026.
The process for submitting a proposal.
To submit a project proposal you must be a member of academic staff from one of our lead institutions. You will be asked to confirm this in the project proposal form.
Those wishing to submit a proposal will be required to read the NZPS Overview and Programme Details to ensure you understand the remit of the programme.
Project proposals must deliver impactful polar science with a reduced carbon footprint.
Relevant NERC Science Areas include:
- Atmospheric science
- Climate change
- Ecology
- Geosciences
- Environmental chemistry
- Hydrology
- Oceanography
- Cryosphere
- Terrestrial, marine and freshwater environments.
Projects should also include the use, review, development, or creation of low-carbon methods, techniques or technologies. This could include:
- Renewable energy
- Satellites, Earth Observation and remote sensing
- Artificial Intelligence and machine learning,
- Numerical modelling
- Data management and analysis
- Autonomous vehicle, platform, and sensors.
Developing partners with industry or other external organisations is strongly encouraged.
A Project Proposal will need to be submitted by form to nzps@northumbria.ac.uk once the 2026 form is live.

- NZPS Recruitment Committee meets. Any requests for project proposal amendments and iterations are communicated to applicants.
- Supervisory teams informed of results of project selection process and studentships advertised. Please note: feedback to unsuccessful teams may be limited.

- Application deadline for studentship candidates
February 2027
- NZPS Recruitment Committee meets to select interview candidates.
- Candidates notified of interview selection process outcome
- Online interviews
- NZPS Recruitment Committee meets to select interview candidates.
March 2027
- Interview outcomes communicated to candidates and offers made
- Deadline for successful candidates to accept studentships
October 2027
- Successful applicants start studentships
