UKRI NERC achieves the Carbon Trust Route to Net Zero Standard Taking Action certification

UKRI NERC has maintained the Carbon Trust Route to Net Zero Standard Taking Action certification for 16 years, meeting The Carbon Trust’s standards, measuring and managing carbon emissions, implementing reduction strategies and verifying progress.

The certification provides independent verification by The Carbon Trust and covers the global operational carbon footprint of the British Geological Society and The British Antarctic Society UK estates as well as ‘Antarctic bases, ships, aircraft and business travel’.

UKRI NERC has made a long-term commitment to decarbonisation through the ‘Carbon Pathway’ Programme, supporting their Net Zero target of 2040.

As part of the certification process The Carbon Trust provides further recommendations to be incorporated into NERC planning for further progress towards environmental improvements.

Visit the UKRI NERC website for their most recent Carbon Report and for more information on their Carbon Pathway programme.

This commitment to net zero environmental science aligns with the aims of the Net Zero Polar Science Doctoral Training Programme, which is currently approaching the launch of recruitment for its second cohort of researchers to advance sustainable practices in polar research. The first cohort of PhD Researchers will start work in October 2026, using and developing sustainable technologies to answer some of environmental science’s unanswered questions.
